Cambodia: History, Geography, and People
History of Cambodia
Cambodia has a rich history spanning more than 2,000 years. The region was influenced by the ancient kingdoms of Funan (1st–6th centuries AD) and Chenla (6th–9th centuries AD), which laid the foundations for Khmer civilization.
The golden age of Cambodia began with the establishment of the Khmer Empire in 802 AD by King Jayavarman II. Over the following centuries, the empire became one of the most powerful civilizations in Southeast Asia, building magnificent temples such as Angkor Wat, Bayon, and Ta Prohm. During the reigns of Kings Suryavarman II and Jayavarman VII, the empire reached its greatest extent and cultural achievement.
From the 15th century onward, the Khmer Empire gradually declined due to regional conflicts and political changes. In 1863, Cambodia became a French protectorate and remained part of French Indochina until gaining independence on November 9, 1953, under King Norodom Sihanouk.
Cambodia experienced significant challenges during the latter half of the 20th century, including civil conflict and the Khmer Rouge period (1975–1979). Since the 1990s, the country has undergone reconstruction and development, becoming one of Southeast Asia’s most popular tourist destinations.
Today, Cambodia is a constitutional monarchy led by King Norodom Sihamoni and continues to develop while preserving its unique cultural heritage.
