Banteay Srei Temple
Overview
Banteay Srei is one of the most beautiful and finely carved temples in Cambodia. Located approximately 37 kilometers north of Siem Reap, this remarkable temple is often referred to as the “Jewel of Khmer Art” due to its exceptional decorative carvings and well-preserved architecture.
Unlike most major temples in the Angkor region, Banteay Srei was not commissioned by a king. Instead, it was built in 967 AD during the reign of King Rajendravarman II by a Brahmin scholar named Yajnavaraha, who served as a royal counselor and teacher to the future King Jayavarman V.
The temple is dedicated primarily to the Hindu god Shiva, although many carvings also depict stories related to other Hindu deities, including Vishnu and Brahma.
Meaning of Banteay Srei
The name Banteay Srei means “Citadel of Women” or “Women’s Fortress.” Although the exact origin of the name remains uncertain, many believe it refers to the extraordinary delicacy and elegance of the temple’s carvings, which were considered so intricate that they could only have been crafted by women.
Architectural Significance
Banteay Srei is unique among Angkorian temples because it was constructed mainly from pink sandstone, a material particularly suitable for detailed carving. The stone’s fine texture allowed artisans to create some of the most intricate and elaborate sculptures found anywhere in the Khmer Empire.
Despite being relatively small in size compared to Angkor Wat or Bayon, Banteay Srei is widely regarded as one of the finest artistic achievements of Khmer architecture. Every doorway, pediment, lintel, and wall surface is decorated with stunning carvings featuring floral motifs, mythical creatures, celestial beings, and scenes from Hindu mythology.
The temple’s remarkable preservation allows visitors to appreciate details that remain sharp and vivid more than one thousand years after their creation.
